Seperti umumnya game SIMS, anda akan memulai sebagai karakter yang anda buat sendiri, atau yang telah disediakan. Kemudian mendesain rumah anda dan melengkapi dengan peralatan yang sesuai dengan jiwa anda, lalu jalani hidup sebagai anggota di dunia SIMS.
Syarat yang harus dimiliki komputer anda untuk mainkan SIMS 3 2009, ialah:

* 2.0 GHz P4 processor or equivalent

* A 128 MB Video Card with support for Pixel Shader 2.0
* The latest version of DirectX 9.0c
* Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2
